National security concerns after attempted assassination of former President Trump appeared on katu.com by KATU.
PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is putting a spotlight on rising concerns surrounding presidents.
KATU’s Political Analyst Jim Moore weighed in on what this means for both Trump and Joe Biden’s campaign.
“Political violence has been rising to the surface in the United States, especially about the past six years,” Moore told KATU’s Victor Park. “People have been expecting something like this. In fact, almost two-thirds of Americans have been saying they’re expecting an assassination attempt. That’s how concerned people are.”
Moore expects to see a boost of Trump supporters. “There is going to be a rally around the flag effect. When something bad happens to you, then people support you more strongly,” he said. “Well see, with Trump, with just his followers, who are certainly going to be energized, or people who don’t necessarily support him started supporting him as well?”
Moore questioned how the Republicans’ National Convention even on Monday could change. He noted how protecting the president has changed since the 1981 attempted assassination of then-President Ronald Reagan.
Protecting both Biden and Trump will be a top priority and venues could change for Biden’s rallies, Moore expects. He notes, however, it remains to be seen what will happen with Trump rallies.
