Global health experts have said that the dangerous, new strain of Mpox spreading quickly along the eastern border of DR Congo is “incredibly worrying”.
The strain was detected in several cities along the border, including Goma, which borders Rwanda.
At least 8,000 Mpox cases have been reported in the DRC this year, including 384 deaths, said the WHO. The majority of the deaths were among children under the age of 15. In 2023, the country witnessed its highest recorded number of infections and deaths, with 654 deaths and over 14,500 infections.
