Newport waterfront development needs to end: Spare Change appeared on www.newportri.com by Newport Daily News.
While putting together my new band … The Chinese Balloons:
• Somewhere in the past 10 years the concept of shame left the building.
The poster boy for this concept is obviously U.S. Rep. George Santos, a Long Island Republican. Santos didn’t just pump up his resume. He made up virtually everything … colleges attended, jobs performed, his mother’s 9/11-related death, money raised and so on.
Possibly the only true thing he’s told us is he used to perform as a drag queen. Santos has been accused of swiping money earmarked for a disabled veteran to get cancer treatment for his dying (now dead) dog.
Santos? He’s refused to step down, blithely waving to his dwindling crowds of supporters. Only 7% of his constituents are still in his corner. How is it even that many?
Santos had an aisle seat at the State of the Union Address, trying to capture a selfie with the president. For now, this is Santos’ show. He won’t leave ahead of the posse.
He’s hardly the first shameless politician. We had Richard Nixon “I am not a crook” (he was) and Bill Clinton “I never had sex with that woman” (he did) among many.
But Santos is a seemingly pathological breed. Nothing embarrasses him. Most of us would be moving to a shotgun shack in Tennessee if we’d been shown as blatant liars every day in the national media. Santos is probably wondering how much Fox News will pay him once he gets tossed from Congress.
Meanwhile, as Big Ange used to say on WPRO long ago … the hits just keep on coming.
• Lots of handwringing about the Waites Wharf hotel project … modified project, reconfigured project?
How about no project? We’ve turned our waterfront into a land development theme park. It needs to stop somewhere.
You want to see the Newport waterfront? Then drive to Jamestown.
Newport waterfront:The proposed Waites Wharf hotel has a new look… again. Here’s what’s changed.
• Sad to see the retro-styled Gary’s Handy Lunch pack it in. But not sad that owner Gary Hooks, 82, gets to retire.
Yes, another part of old Newport has vanished. Feels like only yesterday I could leave work and head home to the Fifth Ward with a variety of takeout options … Salas, the Dry Dock, the Handy and the original Sig’s.
All gone from the Thames Street landscape.
• Raquel Welch was the first pop culture sex symbol I can recall. I enjoyed how she played up her “difficult” reputation on a late 1990s “Seinfeld” episode.
• Did you see those “He gets us” ads during the Super Bowl? They are fake looks at inclusion funded by far-right anti-gay forces.
I defer to Max von Sydow in the “Hannah and Her Sisters” movie: “If Jesus came back and saw everything going on in his name, he’d never stop throwing up.”
Newport Food Scene:End of winter is a special time for locals to dine out
• R.I.P.: Ken Shane. Ken died from colorectal cancer in November during my, um, column sabbatical.
Ken moved to Jamestown (and later Narragansett) from New Jersey about 12 years ago. It must have been hard to move from a lifetime in one state but he moved in order to be with his girlfriend (and eventual wife) the great Nikki Vee.
Ken, 71, had worked in real estate in New Jersey but in his Rhode Island years it was journalism … mostly music and sailing.
Ken made a big splash in a short time. He liked to throw parties, go to shows (we had a blast seeing Graham Parker at the Met years ago) and getting together with friends for Friday afternoon sessions at the Narragansett Cafe bar.
He knew a lot about music, sports, politics and current events. Ken hosted a music show on WRIU-FM and was a talented singer-songwriter. He was endlessly curious. And opinionated, especially if something conflicted with his Jersey sensibilities. Toasting his bagel was equal to a declaration of war.
We shared an affinity for Brian Wilson, the obscure 1970s band Big Star and all brands of soul music.
I regret I never saw Ken post-pandemic. And damn, there’s still so much more to discuss.
