e Spider-People from the first film will return for the sequel, and we get a glimpse of several familiar faces in this trailer. Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales obviously returns, as does Jake Johnson’s schlubby Peter B. Parker. We also see glimpses of John Mulaney’s Spider-Ham and Kimiko Glenn’s Peni Parker. But perhaps most exciting of all is the return of Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy, who’s now fully realized as Spider-Woman in her own right.In the first movie, Gwen was something of an enigma who left us wanting more. Across the Spider-Verse should deliver in that regard. This trailer shows us Gwen fighting alongside Miles and battling the forces of Alchemax. Her relationship with Miles is a major focus. She recognizes his struggles and sees him as a worthy ally in this cause. And the trailer hints at some romantic tension between the two.What’s less clear is how Peni, Spider-Ham and Spider-Man Noir figure into the story. These Spider-People all appear to be traveling together, but it’s difficult to tell if their storylines intertwine with those of Miles and Gwen. They may just be there to add some comic relief to the experience.As we learned in the post-credits scene of the first movie, the sequel will involve a re-teaming of Miles and Spider-Gwen. And as we learn from this trailer, that re-teaming comes at quite the time. Miles is struggling more than ever to balance his superhero duties with his life as a teenager. When his father catches him sneaking out at night, Miles unloads his problems on Gwen, his only confidant. We can see the genuine concern for Miles in Gwen’s eyes, and that’s when it becomes clear that these two will always be better together than apart.Across the Spider-Verse definitely has a lot on its plate in terms of plot and character development. It’s particularly exciting to see how the movie may be retelling the classic Spider-Man origin story with Miles as the central character. That’s not an easy feat, especially given everything else the movie is trying to accomplish. But with the return of the original movie’s writers and producers, there’s every reason to believe this sequel will be both a worthy follow-up and a groundbreaking, hugely entertaining superhero movie in its own right.
