“Nowhere in the history of the game have I seen such disrespect for a general manager”-Isiah Thomas defends former Chicago Bulls president Jerry Krause appeared on www.basketballnetwork.net by Will Starjacki.
In 2020, Netflix released a docuseries titled “The Last Dance” centered around the Chicago Bulls’ final championship run. While the documentary jumps from topic to topic, one recurring theme is the treatment of the Bulls’ former president Jerry Krause. While with the Bulls, Krause saw substantial success, including six straight championship trophies from 1991-1998. Even so, the documentary primarily portrayed his issues with players on the team, specifically Scottie Pippen. Even Michael Jordan had problems with how Krause ran things and would give him a hard time when given the opportunity.
We’ve previously written about Charles Barkley coming to Krause’s defense, saying that “He didn’t take them apart, and everybody who thinks that is a fool.” and “That thing was orchestrated by Jerry Reinsdorf.”
Since then, another former NBA player has come out defending Krause, criticizing how the Bulls players treated him.

Former rival displays support
12-time All-Star and former Detroit Piston Isiah Thomas recently touched on the subject of Krause on “The Pivot Podcast”.
“The way I seen them treat Jerry Krause. Now, imagine you get on your bus, on y’all’s team bus, and the president of the team is sitting there. You walk by the president of the team, and you’re making jokes? And you’re treating him bad? And that’s accepted?… Nowhere in the history of the game have I seen such disrespect for a president or the general manager, even if you don’t like him.”
The Last Dance highlights moments where the players disrespect Krause and make fun of him. Thomas mentioned one of these incidents in his quote almost laughingly. He pointed out that no matter the scenario, you don’t disrespect your team’s general manager. He wasn’t necessarily defending his antics, but more so the way some players handled the situation. However, he did note that the way they talked about him in the documentary was disrespectful because he is no longer with us.
“Now, here’s the other thing that’s disappointing; the man is dead. His kids, his family, people watching that, you ain’t gotta do that. I can’t respect that; I can’t respect that. Now the fans and everybody else, aw yeah, Jerry was this, Jerry was that. Well, in the basketball world, Jerry Krause won six championships.”
Krause passed away in 2017 and could not voice his opinion or point of view in the documentary. Some of the comments were not about him being a bad person but players being open about disliking him. That can be considered unnecessary, especially because he can no longer defend himself. Coming from a player like Isiah Thomas, a long-time rival of Jordan and the Bulls, there has to be some significance behind his concern. All in all, you have to give credit where credit is due. From a general manager’s standpoint, Krause had unparalleled success during his tenure with the Bulls.
