NYSOFA, ElliQ to partner and offer artificial intelligence companion.
NEW YORK (WBNG) – In response to social isolation being a global epidemic and to support the concept of aging-in-place, Intuition Robotics has developed ElliQ, which is a type of artificial intelligence. ElliQ will soon be in a partnership with the New York State Office for Aging (NYSOFA).
“Older adults absolutely use technology or can be trained to use them. I think there’s a common myth that older people are afraid of tech. That’s certainly not the case,” said Director Greg Olsen with NYSOFA.
With social isolation being coined a global epidemic, such as with the older population, the goal is to improve the user’s quality of life. “It engages the individual with artificial intelligence right from the beginning, remembers the types of things that we have conversations about,” said Olsen. “It will ask you things about how you slept, your hydration.”
CEO and Co-Founder Dor Skuler with Intuition Robotics and disclosed how this AI differs from other smart technologies, like Amazon’s Alexa device. “It’s a proactive product built around a persona, personality that has context and is really there to build a relationship with the older adult,” he said. “Our average is indeed 20 interactions per day.”
Skuler said privacy is a pinnacle for the company. “When the older adult shares information with us, let’s say about their pain or how they’re feeling or other aspects, we always ask for their explicit approval on the current basis before we share it with their family members or other people they instruct us to,” he said.
With the partnership launch set for next week, 12 News asked if Broome County’s Office for Aging could be a participating site. “The county Office for Aging directors and the case managers.. they will let us know if they want to participate, how many they need based on their knowledge of the customers they already serve, and then we will get them out,” said Olsen.
When it comes to the partnership, up to 834 ElliQ companions will be given out by the state. If you want to learn more about ElliQ, visit its official website.
