Larry Samuel Silverberg, our beloved brother, uncle, friend passed from this earthly life on March 18, 2023. He was the first child born to Samuel and Lois Silverberg on September 19, 1942, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Larry, a 1961 graduate of Otter Creek High School, enlisted in the Navy after being in the Navy reserve during high school. Following a stint in the Navy he returned to work in the steel mills in northern Indiana. Then the ocean called again, and Larry worked on cargo ships which took him around the world to exotic ports, delightful people and a plethora of cultures. He truly loved the sea, the travel and the adventure.

In 1976 Larry suffered an accident on board ship in the Middle East and was no longer able to sail but continued to travel and enjoy life to the fullest. Larry’s mantra was to always have a positive attitude, which he practiced consistently throughout his life. While in Terre Haute he followed the women’s softball teams and was an enthusiastic supporter of the program. He also thoroughly enjoyed the Larry Bird era at Indiana State University. He established residence in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1981 and became a Phoenix Suns fan and explored the southwest to his heart’s content. In 2002 he moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, and became a proud Floridian. He spent hours walking by the ocean and was knowledgeable about the ebb and tides.

He was fiercely independent and took pride in his accomplishments, which included going to the gym regularly and eating a healthy diet. Larry also appreciated different points of view and shunned conservatism. He stayed abreast of current issues, both national and local, and welcomed discussion, maintaining his independence in his way of thinking.

Port Orange was his home and how appropriate for him to live where “port” is part of its name. Larry was recognized and greeted at the local restaurants and the Publix where people often remembered him and chatted with him. Larry was kind and polite, although he could display a temperament exemplified by little patience. We are thankful to Brookdale of Port Orange for the excellent care they provided during the last few years and to Halifax Health Hospice for making his transition so calm and comforting.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lois Silverberg, brother Timothy Silverberg and nephew Stephen Silverberg. He is survived by a brother, David (Jane) Silverberg of Poplar Bluff, MO, a sister, Deborah (Miguel) Amigo of Terre Haute, IN and sister-in-law Cherry Silverberg of South Bend, IN. He is also survived by nephews and nieces Mark (Allison) Silverberg, Melody (Michael) Edwards, Joshua Silverberg, Andrea Schroeder, Esteban Amigo, Joseph Silverberg, and Elizabeth (Jim) Rogers. Great nephews and nieces include Elianna Schroeder, Arrow Schroeder, Elias Rogers and Lois Rogers.

Arrangements were made with Alavon Crematory and his ashes will be scattered over the ocean, according to his wishes, so he returns one final time to sea.
