Packers quarterback Jordan Love meets Peyton Manning, then impresses appeared on www.packersnews.com by Ryan Wood.
GREEN BAY ? Jordan Love arrived at the practice field Monday morning and met a legend he grew up revering.
Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning was at Green Bay Packers practice to discuss a potential project with his media company, Omaha Productions, and the team. Love, who previously attended the Manning Passing Academy, said he spoke with Manning “for a minute” before practice and expected another conversation once he left the locker room afterward.
The Packers new starter ensured his discussions with Manning were about football, not media opportunities.
“Nothing about going on ‘Quarterbacks,’” Love said, referencing Manning’s documentary-style show on Netflix that has been green lit for a second season.
Love had another quality day at practice, though the Packers starting defense thwarted him on a 2-minute drill at the end. The highlight came on a bomb to Christian Watson down the right sideline, beating coverage from safety Innis Gaines. Love connected on a couple of deep throws in one-on-one drills, one to rookie tight end Tucker Kraft and another to receiver Bo Melton.
The quarterback smiled when asked about putting on a show for Manning.
“That was fun,” Love said.
Manning stood on the field throughout practice, chatting with Packers coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst and president/CEO Mark Murphy. Love didn’t interrupt his practice to talk with Manning, but it didn’t stop teammates from venturing over. Watson stopped by between reps to meet the only player in NFL history with five MVPs.
“As soon as I saw him,” Watson said, “I said, ‘That’s crazy. I’ve got to go say what’s up.’ I went over there, and surprisingly he said he was a big fan. I was like, ‘No, I’m a big fan.’ It was a little back and forth, but it was cool.
“For me, it’s really just humbling to hear that from a guy like that. It just goes to show I’m making progress toward the type of player I want to be. Just knowing the expectations he had for himself, and the expectations I have for myself, I’ve got to keep on climbing.”
Cornerback Jaire Alexander is one of the few Packers players who met Manning before Monday. He was on the NFC’s winning Pro Bowl team, coached by Eli Manning, last season.
Alexander recalled the NFC’s 35-33 win when he saw Manning.
“Oh, it felt good,” Alexander said. “Because, you know, we beat Peyton Manning in the Pro Bowl. Got a little advance off that. So it’s always good to see Peyton.”
