PlayStation VR 2: A Look at the Prototypes and Features appeared on gameishard.gg by Game Is Hard.
During the seven-year journey to develop the final PlayStation VR 2, Sony’s engineers created numerous prototypes for VR headsets and controllers. Even before the release of the first PlayStation VR in 2016, work had already begun on its successor.
One of the early concepts included features such as gaze tracking, haptic headset feedback, and a single cable system. As development progressed, the designers explored more advanced tracking methods. The now-common inside-out tracking was considered from the beginning, and prototypes with internal tracking cameras were tested. One of the early prototypes featured a bulky metal frame on top of the headset, resembling a metal deer antler.
The experiments also involved different camera angles and housing designs. Transparent housings and those with side openings were tested to control the distance between the eyes and lenses.
The controller design received significant attention, with the goal of achieving high ergonomics. Sony worked closely with its European team to gather feedback from a diverse group of testers. The team aimed to balance the weight and center of gravity to ensure comfortable handling during longer gameplay sessions. This required making drastic changes to the internal structure of the controller.
The prototypes underwent further refinement, considering factors like LED placement and accommodating all planned functions. The initial tracking rings had a spherical shape to ensure visibility for the cameras. However, it was later found that the integrated functions made the handle too bulky and uncomfortable. Modifications were made to achieve a more ergonomic design.
Sony’s meticulous experimentation and alterations ultimately led to the development of PlayStation VR 2. For more photos and insights into the development process, refer to the full interview on the PlayStation Blog.
