PlayStation Will Reportedly Receive Discord Integration Soon
The incredibly popular platform Discord will reportedly make a full integration with PlayStation consoles soon, allowing for cross-platform chatting.
PlayStation consoles may soon receive full Discord VoIP integration, a long-requested feature for the platform. Although integration between Playstation and Discord technically already exists, in its current state it only functions to display console gaming activity for Discord users. If this new update is indeed hitting consoles soon, it would allow for a myriad of new crossplay communication opportunities.
Discord is one of the most popular VoIP – short for Voice over Internet Protocol – providers because of its extensive features, many of which are particularly useful for video game players. Fans can join online communities for particular titles and interests and easily chat with friends while in-game. While Playstation does have its own voice chat features, players can’t talk with people on other platforms outside of games, and it requires more work to connect with other players than on Discord. Rumors of a Playstation and Discord connection first surfaced early this year, but no concrete timeline was given for integration.
A recent article from Exputer has brought to light information about Discord coming to Playstation consoles. Sources claim that Discord integration with Playstation will occur when version 7.00 comes to Playstation consoles, and while a date for this is not currently know, Version 6.00 is set to hit in mid-September. This update would be a full connection between Playstation and Discord, allowing for all VoIP features to be utilized.
Playstation And Discord Integration Is Great News For Crossplay
Currently, Discord has an incredibly large user base, clocking in at over 300 million, many of which are undoubtedly console players. Playstation users – especially those who enjoy playing with their friends who may be utilizing other gaming devices – have long wished for Discord integration, particularly after Xbox players received Discord chat earlier this year. If these new Discord VoIP features are indeed coming to Playstation consoles sometime this year, players have a lot to look forward to when it comes to multiplayer. Players will be able to form group chats with ease and talk within their servers while in-game, without being beholden to being in-game.
Full Playstation Discord integration will likely encourage more gaming time spent with friends, and may even inspire some players who had held out on purchasing a Playstation Plus subscription – which is required for online play – to finally take the plunge now that they won’t have to fuss over Playstation’s included voice chat system. Although Discord has made an effort in recent years to distance itself from a reputation of being a platform designed for gamers, the fact remains that for many Discord is synonymous with gaming–so much so that Discord has been an Easter egg in games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Although these rumors of Discord coming to Playstation have yet to be officially confirmed, if the rumors are true, players who enjoy crossplay have a lot to look forward to.
