Political world erupts over Matt Gaetz AG nomination appeared on thenationaldesk.com by JACKSON WALKER | The National News Desk.
WASHINGTON (TNND) — The political world was rattled Wednesday after President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to be his attorney general.
Rep. Gaetz was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2008 after graduating from William & Mary Law School in Williamsburg, Va. He went on to serve in the Florida House of Representatives before being elected to Congress in 2016.
Trump lauded Rep. Gaetz in a social media post as someone who will champion reform within the Department of Justice.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System,” Trump wrote. “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who recently won a seat in the Senate, called on his new chamber to reject the appointment.
“First the Supreme Court granted a president immunity for weaponizing the Justice Department,” he lamented. “Now Donald Trump wants to appoint Matt Gaetz as AG? Confirming him would mean affirming the worst potential abuses of DOJ. He must be rejected by the Senate.”
Replying to the post was Elon Musk, who Trump picked to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency alongside former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
“The Hammer of Justice is coming,” he said.
Rep. John Duarte, R-Calif., told Punchbowl News reporter Mica Soellner he preferred other candidates for the position.
“Matt Gaetz is under an ethics investigation and would be a compromised AG,” he reportedly said. “There are better choices.”
Former Fox News host Geraldo Rivera also condemned the pick, writing “Matt Gaetz is a douche.”
“So bad for Attorney General,” Rivera added. “Gross.”
Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., also expressed concern with the pick.
“Holy s—,” he wrote. “Trump will nominate Matt Gaetz as Attorney General. The man who was at the center of a sex trafficking probe. God help us.”
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., called Rep. Gaetz a “jerkoff” in response to his nomination. He also said Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., would have been a better choice for attorney general.
In June, Rep. Gaetz rejected the House Ethics Committee’s probe into his conduct as “Soviet.”
“The House Ethics Committee has closed four probes into me, which emerged from lies intended solely to smear me,” he wrote. “Instead of working with me to ban Congressional stock trading, the Ethics Committee is now opening new frivolous investigations. They are doing this to avoid the obvious fact that every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration.”
