Pope Francis to leave hospital on Saturday, attend Palm Sunday Mass appeared on thebrunswicknews.com by The Brunswick News.

ROME — Pope Francis plans to leave the hospital where he has been treated for a respiratory infection on Saturday and return home to the Vatican in time to attend Palm Sunday mass on St. Peters’ Square, according to his spokesman.

Matteo Bruni, the spokesman for the Holy See, said on Friday that the pope would return home after doctors at Rome’s Gemelli University Hospital evaluated the latest medical tests.

The pope is then expected to attend Palm Sunday Mass the following day.

The 86-year-old pontiff has been treated with antibiotics for bronchitis after being brought to the hospital on Wednesday.

The news that Francis would return home raised the chances that the leader of the Roman Catholic Church would be able to take part in upcoming celebrations of Holy Week and Easter.

Other senior members of the clergy have already been scheduled to lead those masses but Pope Francis could still attend and even officially preside over the services from a seat near the altar.

Local media reported that the pope shared a pizza dinner at the hospital on Thursday night with doctors, nurses, assistants and security guards.

After breakfast on Friday, the pope reportedly read newspapers and worked from his hospital room.
