PS Plus Extra dropped 48% of its player count in July 2024 appeared on www.truetrophies.com by TrueTrophies.
PS Plus Extra and Premium stumble hard in July 2024
- PS Plus Extra and Premium games for July 2024 saw 48% fewer players than June 2024’s lineup
- If we discount the bonus Days of Play games from June’s lineup, July’s lineup still saw an 18% player count drop
- July 2024 has the third-lowest PS Plus Extra and Premium player count of 2024 so far
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights, which draws the majority of its PSN data from sources beyond TrueTrophies), we track the debut player count of every PS5 and PS4 game that comes to PS Plus Extra.
This includes July 2024’s PS Plus Extra and Premium games, which have seen a 48.67% player count drop compared to June 2024’s player count. That’s despite the fact that PS Plus Extra added Remnant 2 this month — the third-highest debut on the streaming service this year.
Top 10 PS Plus Extra games of 2024 (so far)
#1 — Dave the Diver (April 2024)
#2 — Police Simulator Patrol Officers (June 2024)
#3 — Remnant 2 (July 2024)
#4 — Red Dead Redemption 2 (May 2024)
#5 — Need for Speed Unbound (February 2024)
#6 — Marvel’s Midnight Suns (March 2024)
#7 — Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: The Definitive Edition (June 2024)
#8 — Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands (January 2024)
#9 — Animal Well (April 2024)
#10 — Monster Hunter Rise (June 2024)
Of course, with June’s lineup benefitting from all those Days of Play bonus games, it was inevitable that July would see a drop in player interest. However, if we exclude these bonus games from June 2024’s player count, we’d still see an 18.77% player count drop for July 2024’s PS Plus Extra games when comparing the two months.
This makes July 2024’s combined PS Plus Extra and Premium player count the weakest since February 2024. It’s also one of the overall weakest months for Sony’s subscription service this year.
Top PS Plus Extra and Premium months of 2024 (so far)
#1 — June 2024 (Top game: Police Simulator Patrol Officers)
#2 — April 2024 (Top game: Dave the Diver)
#3 — May 2024 (Top game: Red Dead Redemption 2)
#4 — March 2024 (Top game: Marvel’s Midnight Suns)
#5 — July 2024 (Top game: Remnant 2)
#6 — January 2024 (Top game: Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands)
#7 — February 2024 (Top game: Foamstars)
While Remnant 2 did perform well this month, the next best-performing game was Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion, which saw 69.05% fewer PS Plus players than the shooter. The turnout for July’s games gets weaker from there, with titles like Travis Strikes Again No More Heroes and Job Simulator seeing very little attention from PS Plus Extra subscribers.
It’s a shame, as July did add a few great games that largely got overlooked in this month’s PS Plus lineup. For example, we not only got an excellent party game with PS Plus Extra’s Jackbox Party 9, but we also got a massively overlooked JRPG with PS Plus Premium’s Jeanne d’Arc. Perhaps there just weren’t enough big names in the lineup to pique subscriber interest.
Regardless, it looks like Sony will have to give us a few more candidates for our best PS Plus games list next month if it wants to win back the interest of its subscribers. What did you make of the July 2024 PS Plus Extra and Premium lineup? Let us know down in the comments below.
- When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
