The club, led by long-time rocketry aficionado Matt Barton, provides a unique blend of education, community, and high-flying excitement.

Matt, who also serves as the prefect for the area, has been launching rockets since the 1970s.

“I think it’s a great hobby to get into for anyone really,” Burton shared.

“I’ve been doing it since I was a primary school kid, and I love it. Things have changed a lot over the years, especially with the rising costs of high-power motors, but the thrill remains the same.”

The club caters to a wide range of rocketry interests, from low-power rockets perfect for beginners to high-power models that require specific certifications.

While the number of high-power launches has decreased recently due to soaring costs, the club continues to offer a robust schedule of low to mid-power launches.

The club actively supports STEM initiatives, collaborating with universities like the University of Queensland to help students prepare for rocketry competitions.

“The university students are often involved in aerospace clubs like UQ Space Club and QUT Aerospace Society, and they come along to our launches as part of their projects,” Matt said.

For younger rocketeers, the club offers opportunities to work towards junior certification for high-power launches, which can be a stepping stone to a career in aerospace.

“We’ve had high school kids wanting to get into high power, and the US based company Tripoli Rocketry Association offers a junior certification for those under 18,” Matt said.

“Once they turn 18, it automatically upgrades to a senior certification.”

Many club members have gone on to work with prominent aerospace companies, both locally and internationally, including Black Sky Aerospace in Browns Plains and Rocket Lab in the United States.

“We’re kind of like an interim step or skill-building area for people who want to get into aerospace,” Matt said.

For those interested in exploring the world of rocketry, the club welcomes new members, especially kids and teenagers, who can join with parental supervision.

Upcoming launch dates in 2024 include September 8, October 13, November 10, and December 8.
