In the fall of 1997, Extreme Ghostbusters served as one of Columbia Pictures’ first attempts to revive the Ghostbusters brand, which had been dormant ever since The Real Ghostbusters concluded in late 1991. Only lasting one 40-episode season, the show is best remembered for introducing the fan favorite Kylie Griffin character, a two-part crossover with the original animated team, and an array of tie-ins comprised mostly of video games and action figures.
While not considered a success during its original run, the series has earned a devoted following amongst Ghostbusters fans. This has caused some of the more obscure and rare collectibles to command pretty high prices, with the most coveted being prototypes of the short-lived Trendmasters toyline.
In today’s random news, a hand-painted resin hardcopy prototype of the deluxe Eduardo figure, most notably used at Toy Fair 1997, has made its way to eBay, with the auction also including his grossly overscaled and spine-compacting Proton Pack.
Given the resin construction, the toy isn’t in the best shape, with the Proton Pack including missing wires, various cracking, and some areas broken off, most notably the shoulder straps. That said, for anyone who collects vintage prototypes, you’ll know descriptions such as this are common, as this was constructed to be a limited-time display piece and not meant to be in someone’s collection over twenty-five years later.
The seller provided a few additional images, showcasing the figure as it was presented at Toy Fair 1997, alongside a slightly different prototype seen in marketing material and a dealer’s catalog.
