Report: Jeff Bezos hires firm to explore potential Commanders bid appeared on www.thescore.com by theScore.com.
Jeff Bezos has hired an investment firm to examine the possibility of a bid for the Washington Commanders, sources told the Washington Post’s Mark Maske, Nicki Jhabvala, and Liz Clarke.
The founder of Amazon hired Allen & Company, the same firm that handled the sales of the Denver Broncos in 2022 and the Carolina Panthers in 2018.
Bezos, who owns the Washington Post, has not submitted a bid for the Commanders, but this latest move indicates he may have a high degree of interest in the team. Bezos’ net worth is considered around $119 billion, which would likely allow him to outbid any competition.
Current owner Dan Snyder and his wife, Tanya (co-CEO), announced last November that they had hired Bank of America Securities regarding the possible sale of the franchise. It’s unclear if the Snyders would sell all or part of the team, but multiple sources told the Post they anticipate a full sale of the team.
The only known bidder for the NFC East franchise is Josh Harris, who reportedly toured the team’s facilities last month. Harris, who grew up in the area, owns the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and is a limited partner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“As far as the [sale] process, the Commanders are under a process,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in Phoenix during Super Bowl week. “That’s their process.”
The bidding process for the club is set to take place while the league conducts its second investigation into the team’s workplace. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Virginia is also looking into allegations of financial improprieties regarding the franchise.
