Rooney names Messi ‘arguably the best ever’ over ex United teammate Ronaldo appeared on talksport.com by Robert Calcutt.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney appears to hold Lionel Messi in higher regard than his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

After two seasons as Paris Saint-Germain, the World Cup winner announced in June that he is joining Inter Miami in the MLS.

Messi was also linked with an emotional return to Barcelona but the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner will now play in the United States.

He will be officially unveiled as a new Miami player this Sunday as the American top flight welcomes one of football’s biggest stars.

Given his multitude of successes for both club and country, there is no surprise that Messi is argued to be one of the best of all time.

Rooney certainly thinks he’s up there and even more so than Ronaldo, a star he spent six seasons with at United.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Messi’s arrival, the DC United boss said: “A great move obviously for the MLS.

“Commercially I think it’ll be huge, it’ll draw interest in the game from different regions of the world, I’m sure it’ll do that as well.

“You’re getting arguably the best player to have ever played the game, I’m sure he’ll come here and want to be competitive and want to help Miami climb up the table.

“So, I think not just fans but coaches, players, I think everyone is excited to have him in the league.”

Like Messi, Ronaldo has also enjoyed a wealth of success on the football pitch at United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

He is now at Al Nassr and was reunited with his counterpart in January when he played for a Saudi Pro XI against PSG.

Messi had been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia before his Inter Miami switch, with Al Hilal interested in signing the superstar.

However, with the two stars now playing in opposite sides of the world, it is unlikely fans will see them on the same pitch again.

Luckily for Rooney and DC United, they are not scheduled to face Messi this season as they have already played Miami twice.

However, despite now being 36-years-old, one of football’s greats is still likely to be a force to be reckoned with in the MLS.
