Russia can expect “good things” from Donald Trump, state TV says appeared on www.newsweek.com by Brendan Cole Brendan Cole.

Kremlin propagandists have said Moscow could benefit from the new Donald Trump administration and added that the U.S. president’s talk of tariffs and what he could do to end the war in Ukraine was bluster.

Guests and anchors Russia’s NTV channel gave their take on the first week of the U.S. president’s second term. Amid the projection of tough talking from Trump, one political analyst said that Moscow anticipates “good things” from the new administration.

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment by email.

Why It Matters

It is not certain that the opinions expressed on Russian state television reflect Kremlin thinking, but the comments by the guests on the show Meeting Place have framed the Trump presidency as one that Moscow can try to work to their benefit.

Their comments suggest Moscow is less concerned about what Trump says and more about what he does, which could be a pragmatic view that the Kremlin might be taking.

What To Know

An edited segment posted by Russia watcher Julia Davis showed a montage of Trump and his comments about the war in Ukraine and his criticism of its President Volodymyr Volodymyr Zelensky.

Co-anchor Ivan Trushkin said that Trump sounded like a “broken record” in saying that Ukraine wanted to end the war and that Russia would face tough sanctions if it did not agree to this.

The presenter referred to Trump’s comments at the Davos Economic Forum in which he wanted to knock down world oil prices, hurting Russia’s main export.

But Trushkin mocked the coherence the U.S. president displayed in a Fox News interview in which he said Volodymyr Zelensky was “no angel” and blamed him for “letting” the war happen. Trushkin then attacked the lack of diplomatic experience of Trump’s new ambassador to the European Union, Andrew Puzder.

The guests moved on to discuss how serious Trump was in imposing tariffs on all Russian exports, including aluminum and wheat, while oil could fetch less than $50 a barrel soon. They described how the long-term plan of the U.S. seeks to reconfigure the global oil market in which Moscow would get a smaller share.

But military expert Alexey Anpilogov questioned whether Trump was capable of imposing the sanctions that he has threatened.

Political analyst Alexey Naumov said Moscow should not worry too much about sanctions, accusing Trump of posturing to avoid being criticized for talking to Putin.

The U.S. president’s calls to take control of the Panama Canal and Canada are to present a position of strength, added Naumov.

He said that Trump wants to speak to Putin, a wish that the Kremlin has reciprocated, and that when two sides want something “good things happen—we anticipate good things.”

What People Are Saying

Political analyst Alexey Naumov said: “(Trump) says he wants to speak with the Russian president straight away. The Kremlin says Russia is also ready. When two people really want something, good things happen. We anticipate good things.”

Military expert Alexey Anpilogov said: “There is a new sheriff in town (Trump) but it’s not like this sheriff is in his prime.”

What Happens Next

Putin told Russian TV he was open for talks with Trump, while the following day, Volodymyr Zelensky said the U.S. president could end the war—but only if Kyiv was involved in the talks. Any further U.S. sanctions as Trump has threatened are likely to be revealed within the context of these negotiations.
