The NFL is reportedly trying to persuade Amazon owner and billionaire Jeff Bezos to purchase a team.
Bezos did not submit a bid to purchase the Washington Commanders, which is currently in the process of being sold for $6 billion to a group led by Josh Harris. Currently, no NFL team is for sale, but one could come on the market in the near future.
The Seattle Seahawks could be the “next team likely on the market,” according to the report.
The Seahawks are owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust. Allen, who died in 2018, stipulated that the assets in his trust be sold, with money earned from the sales going to philanthropic efforts.
Unlike the underachieving Commanders under scandal plagued owner Daniel Snyder, the Seahawks are a highly successful franchise. They are also very stable with a loyal fan base and top-notch facilities. In other words, a highly attractive franchise.
If Bezos is interested in purchasing the Seahawks, he might wait until midway through 2024. If the team is sold before May 2, 2024, 10% of the proceeds from the sale price goes to the state of Washington under terms of the Seahawks’ current ownership agreement. For example, if the sale price is $6 billion, $600 million would go to the state.
Jody Allen, Paul Allen’s sister, currently runs the Seahawks. She said in 2022 that the franchise wasn’t for sale, but that status could change.
According to another report, Bezos knows “Seattle is out there” and it could be just a matter of time before he takes over.
