Pope Francis meets with personnel of the Vatican Secretariat for the Economy, with the Prefect, Maximino Caballero Ledo, emphasizing the progress and challenges of implementing the reform of the Roman Curia.

By Vatican News

The employees and collaborators of the Secretariat for the Economy were received in a private audience by Pope Francis on Monday, 13 November.

The Secretariat operates in the field of regulation and oversight of the Vatican’s economic, financial, administrative, computer, and human resources.

In his brief, introductory greeting, the Prefect of the Secretariat, Maximino Caballero Ledo, said, “Ours is a young institution, born with the start of the economic reform; the institution has adapted to the different structures required by the progressive definition of the responsibility that the reform of the Roman Curia as a whole wanted to entrust to us, becoming its personal Secretariat in economic matters.”

The Prefect emphasized that the Secretariat for the Economy seeks to support the progress of the reform in the constant search for a balance between the needs of regulation and oversight—essential from a perspective of transparency and protection of limited resources—and the needs of effectiveness and agility in management, equally essential to ensure the realization of the mission of the Bishop of Rome and the dicasteries that assist him.

Mr. Caballero, illustrating the main reforms on which the Secretariat for the Economy has focused in recent years, took the opportunity to highlight that the progress made so far has been possible thanks to the contribution of all employees and collaborators of the Secretariat for the Economy.

He added that it is necessary to continue to persevere in the work, in an authentic and generous effort, since the contribution of each person is an essential element to continue advancing in daily service.

At the same time, Mr. Caballero added that there is still much work to be done in various sectors, both with a view to improving the new procedures already established and to ensure the future sustainability and protection of the assets of the Holy See.

In conclusion, the Prefect thanked the Holy Father for his closeness to the Secretariat for the Economy, emphasizing that the Pope’s support is essential to advance along the path that has yet to be completed.

Pope Francis, before greeting each person present, invited them to continue on the path already undertaken, both regarding transparency and oversight, and in identifying increasingly streamlined and effective procedures.
