See Elon Musk Take Jay Leno On A Tour Of SpaceX In Texas And Blow His Mind.
On a recent episode of Jay Leno’s garage, Jay heads to SpaceX in Texas for an exclusive tour of the facility with creator and innovator Elon Musk in his venture beyond Tesla aimed at eventually allowing humans to live beyond earth and successfully travel to Mars in reusable rocket ships.
CNBC Prime’s YouTube channel offers a glimpse into the visit on their YouTube channel.
Jay Leno and Elon Musk talk about the manufacturing process, the progress made thus far at the facility, what it takes to get a rocket from Earth to Mars and back as well as what Musk thinks it will take to create a self-sustaining city on the red planet in the future.
Jay Leno Takes A Tour Of Starbase With Elon Musk
Elon Musk takes Jay for a tour of the SpaceX launch facility in Texas called Starbase which has a 500 member staff and focuses on building rockets that will eventually travel successfully into space to Mars.
Musk’s specific goal is creating a reusable rocket that can go back and forth to Mars from Earth carrying up to 100 people at a time.
The first successful space flight from the facility was in 2021.
Currently, the cost of launching a rocket is up to $97,000,000 so getting it just right is essential.
Jay and Elon talk about the fact that space is just 62 miles above the earth but the real challenge of getting beyond earth is going through the atmosphere which requires an incredible amount of speed and velocity.
A Self-Sustaining City On Mars Via Musk And SpaceX
Elon Musk describes the difficulty of manufacturing the rockets themselves and their current ambition is building up to one a month before moving to a more ambitious goal of building up to one every three days in the next few years.
Eventually, SpaceX hopes to have a fleet of 1,000 rockets that can successfully travel back and forth to Mars.
The challenge as it stands today is that travel to Mars is only feasible once every two years due to proximity of the two planets and their respective orbits.
This vision – as Musk sees it – is sending 100 people on 1,000 ships every two years to Mars which would eventually take place over 20 years, leading to 1,000,000 people on a self-sustaining city on Mars after two decades.
Jay Leno and Elon Musk have a long history of collaborating together, with Musk giving Jay an exclusive look at the original Tesla Roadster back in 2008 when the electric carmaker was still in its infancy.
