Sen. Rand Paul to speak at special Chamber luncheon Monday appeared on www.somerset-kentucky.com by Commonwealth Journal.
From the Senior Senator to the Junior.
The Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce hosted Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate Party Leader, in late June for a special event outside its normal schedule of speaker luncheons.
On Monday, July 15, Executive Director Bobby Clue and the Chamber will do it all over again with Sen. Rand Paul, a Bowling Green ophthalmologist who in 2010 joined the long-serving McConnell in the U.S. Senate.
The luncheon event begins at noon at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
Paul is the son of former Texas U.S. Representative Ron Paul and is known for bringing a perspective often described as libertarian in nature to the U.S. Senate. He has served as a ranking member on the Senate Homeland Security Committee and Small Business Committee, and was also a GOP presidential candidate in 2016.
As noted by the Chamber of Commerce, Paul performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky, and free eye surgery to children from around the world. He recently traveled to Guatemala and Haiti on a medical mission trip, and helped over 200 patients, many of them blind with cataracts, have their vision restored.
“This is round two of our ‘non-luncheon luncheon’ series,” said Clue with a laugh, referring to the fact that, before McConnell’s appearance the Chamber had already held their monthly luncheon, and the same will be true with Paul. “Obviously when a United State Senator asks to come to town, you try and do everything you can to accommodate them. This is the same situation we had with Sen. McConnell. It just happens to be in a very tight timeline.”
The address by Paul will similarly be a “legislative update” as McConnell’s was, Clue noted
“(There won’t be) a lot of bells and whistles. It’s going to be an opportunity for us to really focus on talking with Sen. Paul about his perspective on what’s going on in Washington, which I would assume is very much different than Sen. McConnell’s,” said Clue. “… I would assume that he is going to talk about what is going on in Washington D.C., but again, a completely different perspective from one U.S. Senator to another.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he talks about some things going on inside the state of Kentucky,” added Clue, “but I would say most of what Sen. Paul will talk about will revolve on things that are occurring right now in Washington.”
Clue expects a “very large crowd” but will be prepared for accommodating anyone who wants to come.
Tickets are $12 per person, pay at the door, with first-come, first-serve seating. Chamber sponsors at a level that covers luncheons like this one will see this event included in that deal, said Clue.
Individual seats cannot be reserved, but an eight-person table can be reserved in advance. To reserve a table, please call the Chamber directly at 606-679-732.
