Even when Angel City FC continued to put in disappointing performances in the NWSL, Alexis Ohanian didn’t lose his cool. However, following Canada’s loss against Argentina in the Copa America, the investor had enough. Curiously, it is not the performance of the soccer team that has agitated the tech entrepreneur. But rather, one particular tweet with shades of racism is what Ohanian is against. What is the controversial tweet about? Let’s find out below.

On X, an account named Keith Woods tweeted an image comparison of the current and the 2000 Canadian soccer teams. He wrote, “So tragic. Few countries are undergoing population replacement as rapidly as Canada.” The user was referring to how the squad from 2000 featured Native Canadian players while the current team featured predominantly players with immigrant roots. Notably, even Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies had Liberian roots. Alexis Ohanian, however, was not impressed with this comparison.

He quoted the tweet and wrote, “How are these the same people who also post about the value of “Meritocracy” above all.” It seems that Alexis Ohanian is puzzled about how people want a system based on merit and can’t accept the results.  Notably, his wife Serena Williams is an African-American and hence Alexis Ohanian is well aware of the struggles faced by non-native people. But, that’s not the only reason why the entrepreneur is campaigning for the immigrants against racist comments.

Born to an ‘illegal migrant’, Alexis Ohanian always took pride in being a self-made person

Being the co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian is worth around $70 million. But, just like how jibes were aimed at the Canadian players, Ohanian too faced questions over his roots after success. Once on X, he uploaded a video regarding self-made millionaires and the journey behind it. Replying to it, a fan asked the Angel City owner about the wealth of his family and connections. Perhaps, the investor might have felt that his success was being belittled.

He replied, “No. My mom was an illegal immigrant + my dad was a travel agent. I had a great aunt who was a public school teacher. She Saved her entire life to make sure I could go to a 4-year college without debt. That was privilege, sure, but not wealth/connections.”

Understandably, despite being born to an immigrant, the investor had to struggle hard for all his entrepreneurial success. No wonder, he is unhappy with people taking jibes at people who worked hard to represent Canada despite not being a native of the country.
