Sneak Attack on Beach Stage Delights on a Summer Night – The SandPaper appeared on www.thesandpaper.net by By Sandra Weyant.
When the band Sneak Attack took over the Sea Shell Beach Club on Saturday night, a wave of chill vibes and summer energy washed over the resort venue. Dressed in vibrant Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts, the band set the stage for a unique evening that kept guests of all ages entertained.
With a set list that spanned eras and genres, including Phil Collins, Michelle Branch and Chris Stapleton, Sneak Attack had everyone swaying to the tunes and embracing the relaxed beachside atmosphere.
The band’s laidback “summer sizzle” theme suited the beachfront setting, where the audience danced barefoot to the music, feeling the sand between their toes. Others chose to unwind by the fire pits, drinks in hand, and let the melodies carry them away. The sea breeze and live music became one, creating an enchanting evening by the shore.
Sneak Attack is comprised of five talented individuals, each contributing their unique flavor to the mix. Mike Delgado’s lead vocals lend a soulful touch to every song. Matt Rott’s lead guitar adds layers of melody that intertwine seamlessly with the vocals. Bob Devanna’s rhythm guitar and vocals form the backbone of the sound, infused with his love for punk rock and alternative vibes. Glen “X 10” Bleakley’s basslines resonate through the crowd, channeling his punk and pop-punk inspirations. Steve Szymanski’s drumming provides the heartbeat, along with hip-hop and punk rock elements.
Their journeys into music began at various stages of their lives, but a shared love for music brought them together. They met within the lively punk and hardcore scene, forming a bond that would eventually lead to Sneak Attack’s inception. Bleakley revealed the origins of the band’s name: In their college days they would crash parties and surprise everyone with impromptu performances, or sneak attacks.
The members of Sneak Attack draw inspiration from the vocal gifts of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder and the hip hop of Wu-Tang and De La Soul; from the obscure Captain Geech and The Shrimp Shack Shooters and supergroup Me First and The Gimme Gimmes; and from rock and hardcore bands such as New Found Glory, Descendents and Bad Brains.
The band’s favorite songs to perform are the ones that crowds love most, they said. Bleakley said he enjoys rocking out to “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers and getting people to belt out Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” “Boys of Summer” by Don Henley is another winner, in Devanna’s opinion. Szymanski added “anything and everything from Taylor Swift, because she is just so in right now.”
Outside of Sneak Attack, several band members have been pouring energy into original music. Rott showcases his original songs in solo performances and also collaborates with the Deadly Sea Shanties, a platform where his musical creativity takes center stage. Bleakley, Devanna and Szymanski play originals with Triumph & Tragedy, performing Nov. 26 at Sun Harbor Seafood and Grill in Barnegat.
For aspiring musicians, Sneak Attack had a simple but valuable piece of advice: While individual practice is important, the real magic happens when the band practices together. Collaboration, connection, and shared creativity make a band thrive.
Sneak Attack’s performance at the Shell was a journey into music, camaraderie and good times. For a full schedule of upcoming events, visit sneakattacknj.com.
