SNL spoofs Trump indictment appeared on www.usatoday.com by Melissa Ruggieri.
The recent indictment of former President Donald Trump prompted a music-focused spoof for the cold open of “Saturday Night Live.”
“It’s me, hi. I’m the problem,” Trump (played by James Austin Johnson) said, in a nod to Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.” “Well, folks, I got indicted. Or as I spell it, indicated.”
The April 1 date of the show also offered an easy setup.
“It’s time I come clean and admit I broke the law and go quietly to prison,” Trump said before pausing. “April Fools!”
But Trump soon turned to his latest idea to fundraise off his legal woes – music.
After crowing about the success of his “Justice for All” single with the J6 Prison Choir (“We beat ‘Flowers’ by Miley, which we all know is about Liam,” he said in reference to Miley Cyrus and ex-husband Liam Hemsworth), Trump unveiled his next recordings: “NOW That’s What I Call My Legal Defense Fund”(“What a deal – 30 classic covers, all horrible”) and “Trump Bopz,” takeoffs of the popular “NOW That’s What I Call Music” and “Kidz Bop” album series.

The music-minded Trump offered a hip-jerking, mumbled rendition of The Black Crowes’ “Hard to Handle”; a duet of the Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton classic “Islands in the Stream” with “friend” Don King played Kenan Thompson (after singing the lyric, “How can we be wrong?” Trump interjected, “I’ve never been wrong!”); and a phlegmy version of Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.”
“Isn’t it ironic that the first time I actually pay someone, they try to send me to jail? That’s why you don’t pay people, folks,” Trump said in reference to the hush money allegedly paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, which is among the two dozen counts related to business fraud expected to be revealed in the indictment.
After complaining that any jail stint would require additional money for commissary snacks, including “a supply of ramen to barter with a large man named Lizard,” Trump introduced his “most loyal supporter” son Donald Trump Jr. (played by Mikey Day).
“This is really emotional. It might be the last time I see you,” Trump Jr. said.
“From your mouth to God’s ears,” Trump replied, before the pair broke into “Boys a Liar Pt. 2” by Ice Spice and PinkPantheress.
But Trump couldn’t let the song roll without one final comment.
“We love Ice Spice,” he said. “Beautiful hair, beautiful hair.”
