Toro Inoue returns to promote Sony’s PS Portal
In a post on PlayStation Japan’s X account (embedded below), you can watch as PS1 mascot Toro Inoue lounges around on a couch playing his new PlayStation Portal. Of course, it only makes sense that the game Toro plays is Stray — the definitive PS5 cat game. We’ll give a rough translation of the Japanese text below, but check out the PS Portal trailer here.

In the trailer, Toro says that he’s “relaxing with the PS Portal,” that “Stray cats are definitely adventurers,” and that he’s “getting sleepy” so we should “play again soon.” It feels like your typical PlayStation celebrity endorsement commercials — mostly because I’m left unconvinced that Toro knows what the PS Portal is.
It’s not too surprising if you don’t recognize Toro Inoue as a PlayStation mascot, as none of the Doko Demo Issyo series of games he hails from ever managed to make it to the West. Where Crash Bandicoot largely stood in as Sony’s makeshift mascot of the PS1 era, Japan stuck with Toro — a chatty white cat with dreams of becoming a human being.
Toro’s only real noteworthy feature in the West was as a fighter in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Meanwhile, in Japan, Toro has starred in Doko Demo Issyo games for every console from the PS1 to the PS3. He’s also had a few PSP and PS Vita spin-offs, and even featured in a match-3 puzzle game for smartphones, Toro and Friends Onsen Town, as late as 2019.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t had any feature games for the PS5 or PS4 to star in lately, and it’s likely to stay that way now that Sony’s Japan Studio is gone. That’s largely why he’s here promoting the PS Portal with Stray, a game with some other cat, instead of his own fancy PlayStation game.
That said, it’s still great to see this PlayStation mascot continue to get some attention in 2024 outside of a few PlayStation Stars collectibles. Plus, the trailer did convince us that Stray should be on our best PlayStation Portal games list! Let us know if you’d play a translated Doko Demo Issyo game on your PS Portal in the comments below.
