Sony Forms PlayStation Studios Mobile Division

Sony have once again made a big move to showcase their ambition by entering into an agreement to acquire Savage Game Studios with the hope of bringing new life to its PlayStation Studios Mobile Division.

The New Mobile Division

PlayStation Studios’ head, Hermen Hulst, had a lot to say about this development: “This acquisition reaffirms Sony Interactive Entertainment’s commitment to delivering innovative experiences to new players around the world by expanding to additional platforms.”

PlayStation has long been associated with its exclusivity, never going beyond the console and always representative of the best narrative-based video games. Even the best has to diversify at some point and it looks like the expansion into PC and mobile games was the natural end point.

Fans of video games who haven’t always had the resources to purchase a console will benefit from this Sony expansion, however, PlayStation studios have to be careful here. PlayStation Studios can’t – for the sake of expansion – forget what it is that attracts gamers to their products. It must continue to deliver the exclusive titles that have become synonymous with its brand and bring the same level of craft to its mobile gaming ventures.

Who are Savage Games Studios?

Savage Games Studios should have little trouble acclimatizing to this with the likes of Michail Katkoff, Nadjim Adjir, and Michael McManus to call upon. These veterans of the industry have provided the creative output for some great games over the years like Insomniac Games, Wargaming, Supercell, Zynga, and Rovio.

The team was established in 2020 but haven’t actually released a game under that banner so far. They’d clearly have worked on something in recent years, otherwise Sony wouldn’t have acquired their services. They definitely have the pedigree based on past experiences.

Here’s an extract from Michail Katkoff, CEO and Co-founder of Savage Game Studios, comments on the acquisition:

“Our guiding vision was a creative space where experimentation and taking risks weren’t warily avoided, but rather eagerly embraced. We’ve all worked at big studios and while we respect the advantages of ample resources, we wanted to stay small and nimble so we could call our own shots.

“So why then,” you may be thinking to yourself, “would you join PlayStation Studios?” We made this deal because we believe that PlayStation Studios’ leadership respects our vision for how we can best operate and succeed, and because they too are not afraid to take chances.

“All of that, plus the ability to potentially tap into PlayStation’s amazing catalog of IP and the fact that we will benefit from the kind of support that only they can provide. The harder question to answer would be “why not?”

Savage Game Studios, as can be inferred from this statement, are not new taking risks in their field and will be expected to provide the sort of ideas that have led to this arrangement and it looks like they’ve found the right home in PlayStation Studios.

It looks like Savage Game Studios will be expected to help Sony out with its existing IP. Sony’s expansion into PC gaming and mobile gaming was inevitable and it’s now a case of transferring the same high-quality standards that its consoles have had over the years to its other ventures.

Sony blew its competition out of the water in the last generation and this has given it a strong foothold from which to broaden its horizons. The only complaint in recent years from the gaming community has been the lack of access for the larger gaming audience which has always included PC gamers and more recently, mobile gamers. This acquisition with Savage Game Studios should herald a new era for mobile gaming if all goes to plan.
