Southwest Airlines offers flights in the path of totality for April 2024 total solar eclipse appeared on www.expressnews.com by expressnews.com.
Ahead of the April 8 event, Southwest Airlines announced that several of its flights are likely to offer travelers a view of the spectacular event.
“Today’s annular solar eclipse was an exciting sneak peek of the total solar eclipse occurring next year, and our Meteorology Team identified the best opportunities for a potential view of this breathtaking sight,” Southwest officials said in a news release Saturday.
S.A. Airport: San Antonians will soon board planes directly from the tarmac.
The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and travel through 12 other states.
During a total eclipse, the moon is closer to the earth — appearing larger that the sun — than during an annular eclipse, which resembles a ring of fire. In April, the moon will totally obscure the sun.
Based on projections of the umbra and penumbra — the shadows cast by the moon’s eclipse of the sun — the following flights “have the greatest likelihood of offering customers onboard the best view of this moment,” according to the airline. Southwest is careful not to guarantee a view.
- A flight departing Dallas at 12:45 p.m. for Pittsburgh
- An Austin flight leaving at 12:50 p.m. for Indianapolis
- And a St. Louis flight departing at 1:20 p.m., set to land in Houston (Hobby)
Other flights may cross the path of totality, according to Southwest, including a 1:30 p.m. flight from Chicago (Midway) to Austin.
Parts of North West San Antonio will be in the path of totality for about a minute starting at 1:33 p.m. A partial eclipse will be visible before and after totality.
