ith businesses scrambling to produce a commercial that scores a different kind of touchdown, Super Bowl Sunday is as much about the commercials as it is about the on-field action.

Leading brands spent big bucks in the hopes of making TV gold this year, when Fox charged up to $7 million (£5.8 million) for a 30-second ad.

Below are some of the best adverts shown during the Super Bowl.

Doritos – Jack Harlow, Sir Elton John, and Missy Elliott in The Triangle Man

Harlow appears in the ad as an accomplished musician after “quitting” his rap career and establishing a business empire, which includes a new fragrance called “Triangle by Harlow”.

But Sir Elton, who enters the stage wearing a colorful pink and orange suit adorned in triangles, subsequently outshines him for the title of triangle player of the year.

Pepsi Zero Sugar – Great Acting or Great Taste

Steve Martin and Ben Stiller each star in separate ad spots for the improved sugar-free Pepsi.

They demonstrate their talent for presenting emotions like joy and disappointment by acting out certain feelings. We have no way of knowing whether Pepsi Zero Sugar is as fantastic as they claim it to be since they are such excellent actors, according to the theory. So, all we have to do is give it a try ourselves.

In the other commercial, Steve operates on a collie, criticises a restaurant’s tiny portion, and labels others losers when he defeats them at a board game.

“It’s not real: it’s acting,” he explains as he tries the beverage. Or is it? “Only one way to find out is to try it yourself.”

Samuel Adams’ lager – Your Cousin from Boston

On behalf of Samuel Adams’s new and brighter Boston Lager, this advert presents a fantasy view of a new, brighter Boston that includes the amiable citizens of Beantown. 

It hits all the high notes in what ought to be a better world, with drivers happily giving up parking places, Fenway Park fans hugging the opposition, and Kevin Gahnett praising the merits of sharing love rather than hate talk. In the background, Len’s Steal My Sunshine can be heard on the soundtrack.

Uber One and Diddy – One Hit for Uber

Uber has collaborated with Diddy to tell the world about the one membership that saves you on Uber and Uber Eats. It starts in a recording studio, with Diddy’s manager telling company execs that, “Diddy don’t do jingles”. Then it shows a number of famous names singing remakes of classics, ending with the ultimate one-hit wonder.

Dave Grohl practises gratitude in Thank you, Canada

In the hilarious advert for Crown Royal, Dave Grohl expresses gratitude for a variety of objects found in the Foo Fighters Studio 606, from his legendary mixing console and a “tiny” guitar pick to a flannel for “Keeping the grunge dream alive”. He also thanks “silence”, before instructing the room to get back to work.

Rakuten – Not So Clueless

Alicia Silverstone reprises her Clueless role and slips into her yellow plaid outfit for a TV spot promoting the Rakuten service.

In a parody of the comedy from 1995, the scene that takes place in Mr Hall’s debating class, where Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz declares that she “used to be really dumb about shopping”. Cher even debates next to Elisa Donovan’s character, Amber, her adversary, to replicate a famous scene from the Amy Heckerling-directed film.
