Taiwan Hopes Vatican-China Agreement Will Boost Religious Freedom – The News Lens International Edition appeared on international.thenewslens.com by TNL Staff.
Taiwan is hopeful that the recent extension of a provisional agreement between the Holy See and China on bishop appointments will enhance religious freedom across the Taiwan Strait, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
On Tuesday, the Vatican and China renewed the Provisional Agreement, originally signed in 2018, for another four years. This agreement allows the pope to have the final say in bishop appointments, aiming to limit Beijing’s influence over Catholic churches.
The Vatican announced, “Following consultations and assessments, the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China have agreed to extend the validity of the Provisional Agreement regarding the Appointment of Bishops for another four years from today.”
The agreement allows the pope to have the final say in the appointment of bishops in China, a crucial aspect for the Vatican to limit Beijing’s influence over Catholic churches.
MOFA expressed concern that, despite the Vatican’s intentions to improve religious freedoms, the Chinese government has intensified persecution of local Catholic communities. It noted that many clergy have been forced to join the CCP-controlled Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, leading to significant challenges for Chinese Catholics.
However, a Vatican-based expert suggested that the agreement has led China to soften its stance on foreign influence in religious matters, allowing the pope more authority in bishop appointments.
This development has raised concerns about the Vatican’s potential diplomatic recognition of Beijing, which could threaten Taiwan’s ties with the Holy See, its only European ally. MOFA stated it will monitor the situation closely and continue to collaborate with the Holy See to promote humanitarian cooperation and protect religious freedoms.
