Taiwan reports new monkeypox case, asks people to report symptoms – Focus Taiwan appeared on focustaiwan.tw by Focus Taiwan – CNA English News.
Taipei, Oct. 9 (CNA) Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Sunday reminded travelers returning from overseas to report suspected monkeypox symptoms and get medical attention after the country recorded its fourth case of the infectious viral disease.
The latest case involved a Taiwanese national in his 40s who lives in southern Taiwan. He traveled to Canada in mid-September before developing a rash on Sept. 28 and a low-grade fever and chills on Sept. 30 in the United States, the CDC said in a statement.
The patient went to see a doctor on Oct. 5 and was given a dose of a monkeypox vaccine, before returning to Taiwan on Oct. 8, the CDC said.
After arriving at Taoyuan International Airport, the man told quarantine personnel of his symptoms and was sent directly to get medical attention, the CDC said.
The man was tested for monkeypox and was confirmed to be positive Sunday, the CDC said, adding that he is currently being treated in isolation in a local hospital.
A total of eight low-risk contacts have been identified and have been asked to undergo self-health management for 21 days, the CDC said.
The CDC officially designated monkeypox as a Category 2 communicable disease on June 23. The designation means that physicians are now required to report confirmed or suspected cases of monkeypox to the CDC within 24 hours.
Taiwan reported its first monkeypox case on June 24, the second case on July 12, and the third case on Aug. 6. All three were imported infections, with one person with the virus returning to Taiwan from Germany and two returning from the U.S.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on July 23.
Over 70,000 monkeypox cases have been reported in 107 countries since the first infections were reported in the United Kingdom in mid-May, according to the CDC, which said most of the infections have been reported in the Americas and Europe.
Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which can spread through close contact with an infected animal or person, and transmission occurs through direct contact with an infectious rash, scabs, body fluids, or materials contaminated with the virus.
Monkeypox typically results in fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, said the CDC, which urged travelers arriving in Taiwan to report any such symptoms to airport personnel and seek medical attention.
