Tallahassee’s latest urban reforestation effort brings new trees to Governor’s Park appeared on news.wfsu.org by Tom Flanigan.
The City of Tallahassee, Leon County and State Forestry Department joined forces with lots of volunteers on Saturday, Jan. 21 to reforest Governor’s Park. It was the latest part of an ongoing effort to keep the Capital City green.
Governor’s Park, off of Blair Stone Road between Park Avenue and Mahan, is one of the community’s more obscure public green spaces. But City Park Superintendent Brian Hopper said that didn’t keep lots of volunteers from coming out to help put some 250 new trees in the ground.
“We’re doing a little reforestation effort out here. We had some areas that had previously been mowed and we’re reclaiming them as native forest land.”
It’s a bit ironic, added Hopper, that fees from tree cutting permits pay for the new tree plantings.
“We’re increasing our urban forest canopy and all these trees were funded today with those mitigation fees we just mentioned.”
And Hopper suggested howmeowners contact the city, county or state for advice before starting their own tree planting – or cutting – projects.
