The Future of Valve Index and PC VR appeared on www.opp.today by OPP.Today.

Valve Index, despite being towards the end of its lifecycle, continues to have strong usage in the VR market. According to Valve’s monthly Steam Hardware & Software Survey, in July 2023, the headset reached a market share of 20%, making it the second most-used SteamVR headset after the more affordable Meta Quest 2.

However, there have been some changes in the market since the last analysis in March. Pico 4, which was launched in thirteen European countries in October 2022, has surpassed all SteamVR-compatible HTC headsets that were released after the HTC Vive. Although Pico 4 now holds a 1.54% market share, it is still lower than the usage of the original Meta Quest and Windows Mixed Reality devices.

The question remains whether a U.S. launch of Pico 4 can significantly increase its market share, considering the dominance of Oculus and Meta as leading brands.

In terms of PC VR usage, there hasn’t been much change. It seems to be declining and has reached a level similar to 2020. Some high-end VR enthusiasts may have shifted to Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 instead of PC VR.

Ironically, while Valve seems to be focusing more on their Steam Deck and possibly moving away from PC VR, it could be Meta (formerly Facebook) that brings life back to the PC VR market. The upcoming release of Meta Quest 3 might offer better PC VR capabilities than its predecessor.

Looking ahead, a new PC-VR headset called Bigscreen Beyond is set to launch soon, hoping to replace the aging Valve Index and bring new options to the market.

Despite the uncertain future of Valve Index and PC VR, the VR industry continues to evolve, and new advancements and technologies may reshape the landscape in the coming years.
