The horror game Pools is coming to Playstation VR 2 and PC VR, and could look particularly good on Sony’s VR headset.

FACTS

Finnish developer studio Tensori announced on X that it is working on PC VR and console versions of Pools, and there’s already a listing on the Playstation Store for a PSVR 2 version of the game.

The studio has not yet given an exact release date, but it is likely that it will be ready in 2024, according to another X post.

There is also a sneak peek of the PC VR version published in early August.

CONTEXT

What is Pools?

Released on Steam in April 2024, Pools is a horror game in the walking simulator genre, inspired by the internet phenomenon of liminal spaces and back rooms. It takes place in a huge, labyrinthine pool complex and does without a classic story, characters, or notes and clues.

There is no user interface or dialogue. There is also no background music. Instead, Pools relies on sounds to give the player the feeling of actually being there. The sounds and echo change depending on the room you are in.

The game is divided into six chapters, each lasting between 10 and 30 minutes, and is presented as VHS found footage. If the player dies, for example by falling into a deep pit, the VHS tape rewinds to a moment just before.

Interactivity is limited to exploring the environment on foot, by swimming or sliding.

Although there are no monsters chasing the players or suddenly appearing, Pools can be oppressive at times, awakening fear of the dark, confined spaces and otherworldly architecture.

With its minimalist design (no user interface or UI elements), hyperrealistic graphics and focus on spaces and sounds, Pools is a great fit for virtual reality, and thanks to the Playstation VR 2’s high-contrast HDR displays, the game should feel more realistic and terrifying than with any other VR headset.
