‘The Last Of Us’ Is Off To A Rough Start On PC And Steam Deck appeared on www.forbes.com by Kris Holt.

After an almost decade-long wait, The Last of Us is officially available on a platform other than PlayStation. The PC version of TLOU Part 1 just dropped.

On paper, it’s great timing. The massively successful first season of the HBO adaptation has just wrapped up. There will be a lot of non-PlayStation owners who are looking forward to playing the game for the first time.

But it seems like the port of the PS5 remake is in rough shape, at least in terms of it being optimized to run on PCs and Steam Deck. Even though this version had already been delayed, it might have benefitted from some more time in the oven.

As I write this, the Steam user reviews for The Last of Us Part 1 are pretty brutal. Only a third of the 3,223 reviews are positive. It seems many players are not happy with the performance thus far. One reported 12 crashes after three hours of playtime. Another said that while TLOU looks great on PC, it’s poorly optimized. “Game takes more than 8 gigs of VRAM on medium settings, 100% CPU utilization in menu,” a third player wrote. “And the temps are really high too. Probably going to refund soon.”

Before you can start playing (and hoping that the apparently rickety train stays on the tracks), you should wait for your system to fully compile the shaders. Some have suggested this could take as long as two hours.

Additionally, folks have cited problems such as fluctuating frame rates and lengthy load times on Steam and the TLOU subreddit. One redditor has pointed to a possible fix, but try that at your own risk.

Players have taken to the Steam Deck subreddit to report issues there too. “Performance is terrible,” one person wrote. “The deck struggles to hit 30 FPS with all settings at low.” Someone else suggested that using the latest Proton-GE build may help mitigate some of the issues.

On the bright side, a third of Steam reviewers have given the game a thumbs up. At least some folks seem to be having a relatively smooth experience:

I love the idea of having one of my favorite games available to play anywhere without needing to emulate it or rely on a stable internet connection to stream it, but I haven’t had a chance to check out the remake on PC or Deck yet. As far as I’m aware, Sony didn’t provide review copies to critics in advance, which is rarely a good sign. It’s not as if there were spoilers to protect, after all.

Naughty Dog says it’s aware of several issues and is working on fixes. Here’s hoping the studio and Iron Galaxy (which worked on the port) can fast-track some performance patches. It sure sounds like this version of The Last of Us needs them ASAP. Fingers crossed some Proton hotfixes can help too.
