The two movies Morgan Freeman never gets tired of appeared on faroutmagazine.co.uk by Far Out Magazine.

Morgan Freeman knows the mechanics of making movies more than just about anyone else in Hollywood. While he may have studied under some of the best craftsmen of his day, like Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman, Freeman has made it a habit of turning in performances that make him feel like an actual person rather than someone reading off a page, even managing to sell the idea of playing God in Bruce Almighty. It’s easy for an actor with that kind of credibility to get a little bit jaded when coming back to films, but Freeman still knew there was something special in films like High Noon and Moulin Rouge.

Then again, both movies probably couldn’t be more different in the way that they portray their characters. While there had been countless westerns made throughout the 1950s and beyond, seeing Gary Cooper’s performance is something that even modern actors could take a few cues from, usually telling an entire story with just his eyes better than most could do with their entire body.

That kind of subtle performance tends to be something that Freeman has taken with him throughout his career. Despite being known as the heart and soul behind The Shawshank Redemption play the inmate Red, the key to his performance is in his subtlety, practically telling the audience about the life that he’s lived behind bars when talking to the warden about whether he felt that he served his time or not.

On the other hand, Moulin Rouge is the kind of movie that lacks subtlety in almost every frame. Baz Luhrmann was never one to leave his audience hanging, and every frame of Moulin Rouge is about stimulating every sense in your body, from the way that modern songs are incorporated into a bohemian context to the glamorous shots that call back to old-school Hollywood.

Despite the drastic tonal shift between both films, Freeman felt that both of them were among the finest that he had ever seen, saying, “There’s never been a movie that I’ve seen a million times, but there are movies that I will continue to see a number of times. High Noon and one of the best movies ever made was Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge.

For all their differences, though, Freeman’s favourites play off each other in a certain way. While High Noon and Moulin Rouge do have almost nothing in common on the surface, their approach to delivering drama in the most heightened way that they can is all about what makes movies captivating in the first place. No matter if it’s a western shootout or a show-stopping performance onstage, it’s clear that each one of them knows the importance of being almost operatic with their performance.

Because movies aren’t always meant to go for the documentary style, this is a medium meant to show the exaggerated parts of life. Whether it’s an action-packed thrill ride or a heightened drama, Freeman can always recognise a film that’s looking to entertain its audience for every minute of screen time.
