According to the news information portal of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, Vatican News, this year Pope Francis chose as his theme the words of the Apostle Paul to the first Christians of Corinth: ‘Jesus Christ became poor for you’.
This day, proposed for the first time in 2017 by the Supreme Pontiff, aims to put the “most needed” in the center of the ecclesial communities’ attention.
In this fourth edition, the main objective is to ‘exhort the Church to go out of its walls to encounter poverty in the multiple senses in which it manifests itself in today’s world,’ the source said.
Among the actions carried out are free medical check-ups, the delivery of food and even the payment of bills.
In these days, some parishes are distributing about five thousand food packages to those families, through out Rome, who requires the most and for whom about 10 tons of pasta, five tons of rice, flour, sugar, salt and coffee are available, as well as thousands of liters of oil and milk.
After next Sunday’s Mass in St. Peter’s Square and the celebration at 10:00 local time of a Eucharist, a festive meal planned for about 1,300 persons, will be offered to those who wish to participate.
