Third farmworker infected with bird flu, CDC says transmission tied to dairy outbreak appeared on www.atlantanewsfirst.com by Patrick Quinn.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – On Thursday, the CDC confirmed a third farmworker tested positive for the bird flu.

“This third case means we should be alert not alarmed,” said Dr. Nirav D. Shah, principal deputy director of the CDC.

Two of the people who have tested positive were from Michigan and the third was from Texas.

All three cases were independent of each other.

Shah said all individuals are recovering and expected to be okay.

The H5N1 strain of the influenza virus originated in birds, but Shah said the virus was first reported to have been transmitted to cattle in December 2023.

“Cows are regularly transported across the country, and so as cows that have been infected with H5 move, workers are infected,” said Shah.

Shah said his team confirmed the positive sample on Wednesday evening at CDC headquarters in Atlanta.

Shah said the risk of infection for the general public remains low. He said farmworkers, specifically dairy farmworkers, remain the most at risk.

Nine states have had cattle herds test positive for the bird flu, including Idaho, Michigan, South Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Ohio and North Carolina, according to the CDC.

“If you work on a farm in Georgia, even though there haven’t been any herds that have tested positive, it’s still worthwhile to talk about and think about whether you ought to be wearing PPE. Whether it’s goggles, glasses, or gloves to reduce your chances of being infected,” said Shah.

The CDC is surveying flu data through the summer to keep an eye on potential spikes tied to the bird flu.

Shah said they are also communicating with and advising state health departments as the outbreak expands.
