Rory McIlroy has hailed fellow star Tiger Woods for taking on a player director role on the PGA Tour’s policy board, ahead of the proposed merger with LIV Golf.
Following an injury at this year’s Masters Woods has stayed out of the limelight, especially after the PGA Tour announced a shock agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF). The deal will see the Tour work alongside their now former rivals LIV, following a year-long feud.
It appears nobody was left more shocked with the framework agreement than the players, with a number of big names criticising PGA Tour’s commissioner Jay Monahan’s decision to keep players out of the loop of negotiation.
In a bid to reignite the trust with his players, Monahan announced last month that all ‘major decisions’ now had to be signed off by the policy board’s player directors, giving playing members a say in what will happen next with PIF. One man who was added to the decision making was Woods, ending his radio silence regarding the agreement.
On the back of his appointment, Woods said: “I am honoured to represent the players of the PGA Tour. This is a critical point for the Tour, and the players will do their best to make certain that any changes that are made in Tour operations are in the best interest of all Tour stakeholders, including fans, sponsors and players.
“The players thank commissioner Monahan for agreeing to address our concerns, and we look forward to being at the table with him to make the right decisions for the future of the game that we all love. He has my confidence moving forward with these changes.”

One man Woods will be joining on the board is McIlroy. And the Northern Irishman has welcomed the appointment of his good friend, in what is set to be an important few months for professional golf. Lauding the 82-time Tour winner, the Northern Irishman said: “Tiger’s stepped up for all of us on Tour and I think he realises all the players on the policy board are trying to play regular golf and at the same time trying to navigate all these different things as well, so he’s maybe got a little bit more time on his hands than we do.
“So for him to step up and sort of take a little bit of the load off us is very much appreciated.” Both McIlroy and Woods had both been vocal in the Tour’s initial dispute with the LIV setup, but are no both set to play a huge part in uniting the two circuits.
McIlroy’s discussion surrounding the LIV saga has been toned down by the Northern Irishman on the back of the agreement announcement, having cancelled four pre-tournament press conferences, including at last month’s Open Championship McIlroy’s media snub has come to an end this week though, as he chose to field questions ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Thursday.
