The town of Eagle was nearing completion on a trails master plan.

A meeting on the plan was attended by representatives from the International Mountain Biking Association, the town of Eagle, Eagle County and the Bureau of Land Management.

“Open house meetings like Wednesday’s four-hour informal gathering will play an important role in the upcoming finalization of the master plan recommendation,” the Vail Daily reported. “At that point, though, Eagle will still find itself a distance from any action on the plan, as the town can’t begin implementing most of their ideas until the Bureau of Land Management finalizes its new Recreation Management Plan, which will determine how their lands are managed during the next 20-30 years.”

Stan Zemler was selected from a field of more than 150 candidates to be the new town manager for the town of Vail.

“Zemler, 54, who began his career with the Environmental Protection Agency, has been the president and chief executive officer of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce since 1997,” the Vail Daily reported. “Prior to that, he was Boulder’s deputy city manager, also spending three months in the role of acting city manager.”

President Bill Clinton visited Vail, attending a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet Academy at the Vail International Dance Festival and playing golf with former President Gerald R. Ford.

“Arriving from Oakland on Friday night, Clinton arose Saturday morning to tee off at Arrowhead at Vail in a four-some that included Jerry Ford, golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, and Houston businessman Ken Lay,” the Vail Trail reported. “On Sunday morning, he jogged two miles down from the home of Leonard Firestone, where he stayed and which is adjacent to the Ford residence, then golfed 18 holes at the Vail Golf Club.”

Clinton also took hikes with his family and rode a horse from Beano’s Cabin down Beaver Creek Mountain.

“But early Monday morning it was back to work, taking off from the Eagle County Regional Airport on Air Force Two shortly after sunrise for Tulsa, Okla., where he gave a major speech on health-care reform to the nation’s governors.”

Students at Vail Mountain School, over the course of the summer, had been donating four or more hours of time to help turn a historic cabin into the school’s music center, the Vail Trail reported.

“The historic Baldauf cabin, built around 1906, will finally live up to its full potential,” the Vail Trail reported. “When the second phase of its restoration is completed next month, the cabin will be used to house small concerts, seminars and possibly future art exhibits.”

In an announcement from Peter W. Seibert, chairman of the board, and Richard L. Peterson, president of Vail Associates, details were released about the mountain’s new master plan, which intended to impose future design limits and capacity constraints, the Vail Trail reported.

“In a joint statement, Seibert and Peterson revealed that the Vai Mountain Master Plan will establish an eventual design day operating capacity of 11,000 skiers a day on Vail Mountain,” the Vail Trail reported. “To date, Vail has seen a few peak day skier volumes of approximately 8,500 skiers. The Vail Mountain Plan measure of ‘skier capacity’ takes into consideration not only life and slope capacity, but also the quality of the skiing experience, as expressed in such subjective matters as snow coverage and length of lift lines.”
