ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1138 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, July 31st

Farewell, July! Welcome, August! Hopefully you are rainier than this past month, because it is altogether too hot and dry. We did have some rainy days here in the mountains, but not enough.

Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday and I dished out this curious puzzle:

What has 4 letters, sometimes has 9, and never has 5.

This is just a numbers game. ‘What’ has four letters. ‘Sometimes’ has nine letters. ‘Never’ has five letters. Tricky tricky!

Alright, let’s solve the first Wordle of August!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Pasta.

The Clue: This Wordle has double double letters.

Okay, spoilers below!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

A lucky guessing game today, though I sacrificed a possible second-guess win by guessing all new letters for my second word. CRATE, it turns out, left me with just 15 remaining possible solutions. SLINK slashed that down to just one: CHALK for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

Can you solve today’s phrase?

I tied the Bot today, so I get 1 point for guessing in three and that’s all. Works for me!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “chalk” comes from the Old English word “cealc,” which in turn comes from the Latin word “calx” meaning “limestone.” The Latin term is believed to have been borrowed from the Greek word “khalix,” meaning “pebble.” The Greek term is related to a root meaning “small stone,” reflecting the material’s nature as a soft, white, porous sedimentary rock. This material has been used since ancient times for writing, drawing, and marking.
