Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., has a plan to put an end to the Electoral College to “protect democracy,” according to a new report.
Schiff has created a new policy agenda as a part of his campaign for the Senate seat previously held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein that also includes plans to expand the Supreme Court — and eliminate the filibuster, Politico reported.
“I think our democracy is at more grave risk now than ever,” Schiff told Politico. “And it’s clear that that issue is going to be front and center — and needs to be front and center — on the national stage.”
Other provisions would make Election Day a federal holiday to encourage as many people as possible to vote, and make the process easier, give felons who have completed their sentences the right to vote, and institute term limits for the Supreme Court.
Schiff is currently leading polls in his Senate race.
California operates with a jungle primary, in which all candidates participate with the top two vote-getters advancing to the general election. A recent poll showed Schiff at 28%, nine points ahead of second-place Steve Garvey, a Republican, and 11 points ahead of third-place Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif.
