Trump must denounce the Jew haters appeared on www.nydailynews.com by Alan M. Dershowitz.

Whenever I met with then-President Trump, he would ask me why more Jewish don’t vote for him. He emphasized his role in moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the Golan Heights as part of Israel and combating antisemitism on campuses. I explained that although many Jewish appreciated his positive role on these important matters, most Jewish vote on a range of issues, including choice, gay rights, climate, guns, separation of church and state, and the Supreme Court.

Now I would have to add to that explanation for why many Jewish will not vote for him: the recent very public meal Trump had with two overt antisemites, Ye and Nick Fuentes. Many Jewish take him at his word that he was unaware that Fuentes was a Holocaust denier and Jew hater. But Trump had to be aware of recent, highly publicized anti-Jewish statements by Ye, especially his frightening call for “death con 3? against the Jewish people.

Why then would Trump agree to associate with such an antisemite? Trump himself is not an antisemite. His record with respect to Jewish has been quite good. It is true that Ye had praised him on the Tucker Carlson show, and we know that he appreciates and rewards praise. But that is no excuse for a public display of friendship toward a bigot. He could have thanked him in private. David Duke has praised him too, as have other horrible people. Trump would never be seen in public with Duke and his ilk. So why is Ye different?

Defenders of Trump point out that Ye is crazy and that his antisemitism is a product of his sick paranoia. That is no excuse for legitimating Ye by dining with him in a very public way, especially in the immediate aftermath of his “death con” threat.

Trump should now go out his way to delegitimize Ye and his dangerous, even if crazy, calls for “death con 3,” as well his antisemitic canards about Jewish control over Black people and others. Whether crazy, bigoted or both, Ye has an enormous following on social and other media. He must be discredited in the court of public opinion, especially by a former president who credited him among his own millions of followers and admirers.

Trump must do more — much more — to use his bully pulpit to try to undo the terrible damage he has done by dining with Ye and Fuentes. This is not a partisan or “get Trump” demand. It comes from Jewish and non-Jewish who have supported him, befriended him, voted for him and honored him. His former ambassador to Israel, the prime minister designate of Israel, the head of the Zionist Organization of America and many other friends have critiqued him and asked him to make amends. He should do so — strongly, unequivocally, loudly, unambiguously and immediately. He made a serious mistake, and he should be big enough to admit it, even if it costs him some votes among Ye followers. This is not about votes — by Jewish or others. It is a matter of basic principle and decency.

At a time of increasing antisemitism from both hard right and hard left, as well as from some Islamic extremists, every decent person, regardless of race, party, ideology or other identities, must come together to discredit the oldest of prejudices that only seems to increase and spread with the passage of time. Trump should continue to be part of the solution to that ancient problem — rather than becoming part of the problem. His legitimation of Ye may encourage others to emulate Ye’s bigotry. I’ve received dozens of emails and messages agreeing with Ye. Trump now has a special responsibility to delegitimize him and his despicable message among his many followers.
