U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider has officially asked Congress to approve $1 million in federal funds for a health care center planned for Wheeling School District 21, his office announced in a recent news release, a request that comes after the Democrat from Deerfield originally called the idea for the facility a “fabulous” one.

When SD21 Superintendent Michael Connolly announced to local leaders the district planned to construct a new district administration building and include a community health care center in it, he also asked for financial support.

Schneider’s request to the federal Community Project Funding and the House Appropriations Committee for the SD21 health facility was one of 15 requests from his and other legislative representatives’ offices, which will be considered by the committee and later voted on by the U.S. House and Senate, according to the release.

“Accessible, affordable health and social services are a cornerstone of a thriving community,” Schneider previously told Pioneer Press. “That’s why I am requesting funding to help build a [health center] in Wheeling’s new community service center to address their students’ and community’s health needs.

“This innovative health center will provide quality physical and mental health services, support for the unhoused and tackle other social determinants of health like accessible transportation by bringing services directly to those in need,” he said. “By meeting these unmet needs, Wheeling will be healthier, more affordable, and more livable.”

The Wheeling-based SD21, with its more than 6,000 students across 12 schools in grades pre-K to 8, is a feeder district for Arlington Heights-based Township High School District 214. SD21 serves the villages of Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights, Northbrook, and unincorporated Cook County.

According to state school board data, 41% of families in SD21 are low-income. District officials add that many of them have  limited access to quality and affordable health care.

In December, SD21 officials broke ground on London Crossing, at 999 W. Dundee Road, a 42,000-square-foot building that will feature the community health clinic on the first floor, district administrative offices on the second and a third floor with community meeting space. The building is estimated to cost a total of $15 million to $17 million and is expected to open in the fall, according to district information about the project.

“We are deeply grateful to Congressman Schneider for the incredible support he has provided as we work to realize our district’s vision to be an anchor of service to our community that supports the learning, development and health of all students and families,” Connolly said in an interview with Pioneer Press. “We look forward to working with the Congressman and his staff as the Congressional appropriations process continues and are excited for the weeks and months to come as the construction of the district’s new community service and administrative center is completed.”

According to district administrators, construction is progressing according to plan. The district anticipates moving into the building toward the end of October or beginning of November, officials said.

Currently, installation of exterior windows is being completed on the building and framing of rooms and offices is being performed on all floors. Drywall is expected to be installed in early July and the community service rooms are scheduled to be built afterward, officials explained.

Connolly said district leaders continue to actively engage with various partners to plan for programming that will be offered once the new building is completed later this fall.

“We are at the beginning stages of our work in identifying a partner for an eventual health center to be housed in the new facility,” he said.
