UAE’s Mohamed bin Zayed calls Israel’s Netanyahu amid tensions appeared on www.al-monitor.com by Al-Monitor: Independent, trusted coverage of the Middle East.
The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ), spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Tuesday, amid public disagreements with the Israeli government on issues related to the Palestinians.
Netanyahu called Sheikh Mohamed, and the two discussed bilateral relations. They specifically spoke about the UAE-Israel free trade agreement and the United Nations climate conference, COP28, which will take place in the UAE in November, according to the official Emirates News Agency.
“His Highness affirmed the UAE’s ongoing commitment to bilateral relations with Israel, describing its cooperation as a strategic approach to peace and development, which is an aspiration for the entire region,” the outlet reported.
Why it matters: The conversation marked the first time — at least officially — that MBZ and Netanyahu spoke since the latter returned to office in late December. MBZ also congratulated Netanyahu on his inauguration.
The UAE has publicly criticized the Israeli government several times since then, condemning National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s January trip to the Temple Mount/al-Haram al-Sharif, Israeli security raids in the West Bank and other developments. Netanyahu’s new coalition includes several controversial Jewish nationalist politicians, including Ben-Gvir, and this has led to concerns about the future of UAE-Israel relations.
The Gulf state’s criticism of Israel this year constitutes a shift in tone from the years following the Abraham Accords. Israel and the UAE have dramatically boosted their political, cultural and especially economic cooperation since signing the US-brokered agreement in 2020.
Netanyahu was supposed to visit the UAE in January, but the trip was postponed for reasons unknown. However, MBZ notably hosted Netanyahu’s predecessor, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, in Abu Dhabi last month.
Know more: The call between MBZ and Netanyahu follows two significant economic developments. Israel and the UAE activated their economic partnership agreement in March. The agreement is essentially a free trade deal. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company also announced last month its offer to buy a stake in Israel’s NewMed Energy.
