Ukrainian president Volodymyr Volodymyr Zelensky to address Irish students over video link appeared on www.independent.ie by Katherine Donnelly.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Volodymyr Zelensky will address further- and higher-education students in Ireland via video link on November 16. He has already delivered similar live broadcasts to students in the US and UK.
s well as the address, Mr Volodymyr Zelensky will engage in a questions and answers session.
The request for the event was made through Ukrainian ambassador to Ireland Gerasko Larysa to the Department of Further and Higher Education.
The broadcast is being facilitated with the help of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
It will beam into all higher education colleges, but questions will be accepted from students in only one location, probably Maynooth University.
Students from colleges of further education are expected to be invited in to their nearest third-level institute for the broadcast.
Further and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris said it was “so important that the next generation hear directly from the president of a country that is experiencing an illegal invasion, but also a president who is standing up for democracy, freedom and European values”.
About 500 Ukrainian students have enrolled on third-level courses in Ireland, while others may be applying for Springboard, the programme that provides higher education places for unemployed people.
Just over 260 Ukrainians are pursuing post-Leaving Cert (PLC) programmes. There are also 87 Ukrainian researchers registered in Ireland.
A number of Ukrainian academics have moved to Ireland. Last month, UCC welcomed five under its Sanctuary Fellowship Scheme, which supports academics and staff from higher education institutes who are at risk as a result of conflict or other serious human rights violations.
