The tens of thousands of cyber-attacks launched against China’s Northwestern Polytechnical University have finally been traced, after months of probe, to the Office of Tailored Access Operation, affiliated to the National Security Agency of the United States.

According to the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center, TAO had launched at least tens of thousands of vicious cyber-attacks against China’s online entities, “controlled the related network devices and suspiciously stolen high-value data”. TAO’s action is not surprising. After all it stands for Tailored Access. Viewing China as an enemy, the US is mobilizing its official resources to launch cyber-attacks against it, intruding network servers, terminals, network exchanges, routers, even firewalls, and has stolen over 140 gigabytes of high-value data.

By targeting NPU, which features aerospace technology, the US has “tailored” its victims and “accessed” their databases without invitation. This is no less than “violation of sovereignty”, and also shameless theft. Among the words often used by the US government, “rogue” is perhaps the best and most suitable one to describe its action.

By launching such cyber-attacks, the US has peeled off its own mask of “cybersecurity”. It blocked its own companies from selling chips to Huawei at the cost of their interests. The US forbids its enterprises from using Huawei devices under the disguise of “cybersecurity”, but the idea is to let the US’ Windows operating system be a backdoor to hack user’s computers.

A US delegation bullied senior UK officials to ban Huawei, also in the name of “cyber-security”.

It is clear that the US is the thief crying “stop thief”.

Both the US’ friends and enemies should be alarmed, as the measures the US is now taking against China can also be taken against another country tomorrow. The US has always been seeking technological hegemony, but its hegemony only does harm to others. Don’t forget how it monitored many Western leaders via the Prism Project. Who knows how many more such projects are going on?
