Imagine being rich, handsome, and most importantly Iron Man, and still being intimidated by Chris Hemsworth? Well, there aren’t many men like Robert Downey Jr., who possesses a balancing charm and a self-deprecating sense of humor. And yet, the actor was weirdly insecure about his MCU co-star, Hemsworth.
During a recent episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, Jeremy Renner, who played MCU’s Hawkeye, reflected upon a hilarious incident from The Avengers set. Discussing the time when Robert Downey Jr. wanted to hurt Chris Hemsworth while filming The Avengers, Renner disclosed the reason behind Downey’s audacious decision.

Robert Downey Jr’s Shocking Insecurity Towards Chris Hemsworth
Being a superhero and suiting up for the role, is not everybody’s cup of tea. However, the Marvel actors did their best when it came to putting their stature on display. But certainly, none could do it better than the Thor actor, Chris Hemsworth. Putting his gracious look and humongous physique on display, Hemsworth certainly made a few of his co-stars feel super conscious about their bodies.
Well, despite being the philanthropic playboy billionaire, even Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. failed to escape the insecurity of his subconscious mind after witnessing Chris Hemsworth. Although it’s wild to imagine such a rich, successful, and handsome actor to be jealous of Hemsworth’s good looks, it is in fact true.
According to Jeremy Renner, who played one of the original six Avengers in the MCU alongside Downey Jr. and Hemsworth, the Iron Man star was unbelievably insecure about the Aussie actor. Catching one glimpse of Chris Hemsworth in that Thor uniform, Downey immediately joked that The Avengers cast should take out one of his knees.

Jeremy Renner Shared A Hilarious Story From The Avengers Set
Sharing the hilarious story during his appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, Jeremy Renner mentioned how quickly Robert Downey Jr’s insecurity escalated to physically hurting Chris Hemsworth. Nonetheless, disclosing Downey’s dark joke of taking out one of Hemsworth’s knees, Renner mentioned how the duo became best of friends, on set.
“I knew Robery Downey Jr., I knew Scarlett Johansson, I just didn’t know Chris Hemsworth…Yeah, he’s amazing, but we didn’t know, right?”
Beginning of the story, Jeremy Renner mentions, “On the first day, we’re all waiting around in our costumes. It looks like it’s Halloween.” He then added, “we’re excited but equally feeling ridiculous. I feel like we all knew each other… except for this Hemsworth guy, because he comes from Australia.”
“He’s (Chris Hemsworth) the tallest, the most good-looking…Downey was like, ‘We gotta break his knee. We gotta take him out. This guy’s too good-looking. He’s too tall, he’s too charming, f*ck this guy.’”
Eventually, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth ended up becoming friends and co-stars over the next decade. Further, the trio starred in multiple MCU projects and enhanced their long friendship, not just as the main characters but also in real life.
