Check What Is Dolby Vision for Games? Everything You Need to Know
Microsoft is bringing Dolby Vision Gaming support to its Xbox X/S Series consoles today. The feature has been in testing since May and will be available in more than 100 HDR games in the future. While Xbox has supported the HDR10 standard for years, Dolby Vision Gaming is making its first appearance on Xbox consoles and offers support for dynamic metadata. Microsoft says this should result in “brighter lights, sharper contrast, and more vibrant colors.” “There are more than 100 next-gen HDR titles optimized for Series X/S that support Dolby Vision, and in the future, more games like Halo Infinite will take advantage of Dolby Vision,” said Katie Slattery, Xbox program manager at Microsoft.

What is Dolby Vision for gaming?
Dolby Vision was introduced in 2014 as a dynamic variant of HDR (High Dynamic Range (HDR)). The industry standard for HDR is HDR10, which uses metadata to tell the TV or monitor how to render an image, with peak brightness (1000 nits) defined as a static value for the entire video. However, HDR10 is used more for movies and TV shows than gaming.
In recent years, therefore, a standardization of HDR for games has been developed. The HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGiG) establishes best practices and values ??for HDR game rendering. HGiG aims to achieve more predictable and consistent performance on any TV, similar to HDR10 for movies and TV. However, this also means that it is not the most optimal performance that can be expected from a game that supports HDR.
Dolby Vision for Gaming uses dynamic metadata to define the brightness of the TV picture on a frame-by-frame basis. Depending on the characteristics of your TV, the brightest and darkest parts of the picture are adapted to your TV, resulting in better contrast, more detailed images, and richer, more expressive colours. And with support for Dolby Vision 4K/120Hz, games that support these technologies can be played even more dynamically and expressively.
