The southern edge of a low-pressure system focused over British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is expected to bring a chance of light rain to the San Francisco Bay Area from Friday night into Saturday. Another chance of rain, which is likely to be even lighter, arrives Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Clouds were pushing into the Bay Area on Friday, with a weak cold front approaching the region. The system is expected to continue to usher heavy cloud cover into the region through the day. The clouds are likely to obscure views of Saturday morning’s solar eclipse. Showers are possible Friday night into Saturday.

Friday through Saturday, Sonoma and Marin counties are forecast to receive a tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain, while Napa County and the western San Mateo peninsula could see a few hundredths of an inch. “Not much rain for the rest of the Bay Area,” said Dial Hoang, a forecaster for the weather service.

Saturday afternoon into Sunday is expected to be dry and bring a warming trend. Afternoon highs over the weekend are forecast to be in the 70s at the coast and in the 70s and 80s inland. Sunday will likely be warmer than Saturday.

Monday brings another chance of rain. “We do have another system coming to the area, mainly to the North Bay,” Hoang said. “We’re not expecting as much rain in the North Bay, only up to a tenth of an inch.”

A ridge of high pressure is expected to build over California next week, bringing a spell of dry weather. While low pressure is associated with cool, wet weather, high pressure brings dry, warm conditions.
